Other User-Supported/Freeware Offerings:
The user-supported/freeware scheme is described in CHASM's
documentation in the section titled "Miscellaneous and a Word
From Our Sponsor...". If you like this rather novel way of
marketing, you might be interested in other programs offered
under the same deal. I have experience with two other such
programs at this time, and can recommend both of them highly.
PC-TALK is an asynchronous communciations package, allowing you
to use a modem to talk to other computers. To receive a copy,
send a disk and stamped return mailer to:
Andrew Fluegelman
P.O. Box 862
Tiburon, CA 94920
Note: Andrew is the originator of the whole Freeware idea, and in
fact, the name "Freeware (tm)" is a trademark of his company, The
Headlands Press.
PC-FILE is a general purpose database manager program. I use it
to maintain records of your donations, and to generate mailing
labels when announcing significant upgrades to my contributors.
To get a copy, send a double sided disk (or two single sided
ones), along with a stamped return mailer to:
Jim Button
P.O. Box 5786
Bellevue, WA 98006
Jim coined the phrase "user-supported" which means "Freeware"
without violating AF's trademark. To the best of my knowlege,
Jim intends "user-supported" to be a generic term for free use
by everyone using the Freeware-style distribution scheme. In
magazines and on bulletin boards you may see "user-supported"
abreviated to U/S.
In addition to these packages, I have heard of, but not tried the
following U/S programs:
1-Ringy Dingy (Async communications)
